Penile Implant Surgery
What is a Penile Implant?
A penile implant, also known as a penile prosthesis, is a surgically implanted device designed to help men with severe erectile dysfunction (ED) who have not responded to other treatments. The implant allows men to achieve and maintain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse. It is a long-term, effective solution for ED that does not require medication, injections, or external devices.
Types of Penile Implants
There are two main types of penile implants:
- Inflatable Penile Implant (Most Common)
- A fluid-filled device that allows for a more natural-looking erection.
- Consists of two cylinders placed in the penis, a pump in the scrotum, and a fluid reservoir in the abdomen.
- The patient activates the implant by pressing the pump, inflating the cylinders.
- The erection is reversed by pressing a release valve.
- Malleable (Semi-Rigid) Penile Implant
- Made of bendable rods placed inside the penis.
- The penis remains firm but flexible and can be positioned up or down as needed.
- Easier to use, making it a preferred option for older patients or those with limited dexterity.
Who Needs a Penile Implant?
Penile implants are recommended for men with:
- Severe erectile dysfunction (ED) that does not respond to oral medications, injections, or vacuum devices.
- Peyronie’s disease with significant curvature and ED.
- Penile fibrosis or scarring from previous surgeries or conditions affecting penile function.
- Post-prostatectomy ED following prostate cancer surgery.
Surgical Procedure
- Duration: The surgery typically takes 45–60 minutes.
- Anaesthesia: General or spinal anaesthesia is used.
- Incision: A small incision is made at the base of the penis or scrotum.
- Placement: The implant is carefully inserted into the erectile chambers (corpora cavernosa).
- Recovery: Most patients go home the same or next day and can resume normal activities within 4–6 weeks.
Recovery and Post-Surgery Care
- Swelling and mild discomfort are normal in the first few weeks.
- Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.
- Patients should avoid sexual activity and heavy lifting for at least 4–6 weeks.
- Most men can begin using the implant within 6 weeks after surgery.
FAQ
Will a penile implant affect sensation or orgasm?

Can I still have children with a penile implant?
Yes, if fertility is intact, a penile implant does not affect sperm production or ejaculation.
How does an inflatable implant feel compared to a natural erection?
An inflatable implant closely mimics a natural erection in terms of firmness and flaccidity, while a malleable implant remains firm at all times.
