Robotic Prostatectomy – Post-Procedure Care

What is a Robotic Prostatectomy?

Robotic prostatectomy is a minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgical procedure used to treat prostate cancer by removing the prostate gland. It is performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, which allows for greater precision, less blood loss, and a quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

What to Expect After a Robotic Prostatectomy

  • Mild to moderate abdominal discomfort, which improves over time.
  • A catheter will be placed for seven to ten days to allow the bladder to heal.
  • Temporary urinary incontinence, which improves with pelvic floor exercises.
  • Some degree of erectile dysfunction, which may improve over several months.
  • Mild fatigue for a few weeks, as the body recovers from surgery.

Post-Procedure Recovery Tips

  • Follow catheter care instructions and avoid pulling or twisting the catheter.
  • Walk daily to improve circulation and prevent blood clots.
  • Do pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) as advised by your doctor.
  • Eat a high-fibre diet to prevent constipation and straining.
  • Refrain from lifting heavy objects, strenuous exercise, or sexual activity for at least six weeks.

What to Avoid

  • Avoid excessive sitting for long periods to reduce abdominal pressure.
  • Do not take baths, swim, or use hot tubs until the catheter is removed.
  • Avoid driving until you feel comfortable and no longer require strong pain medication.

When to Contact the Doctor

  • Fever over 38°C, chills, or signs of infection.
  • Large blood clots in urine or complete inability to urinate after catheter removal.
  • Persistent or worsening incontinence beyond three months.
  • Severe pain that is not controlled with prescribed medication.

Recovery Time

  • Most patients recover within four to six weeks for light activities.
  • Urinary function and erectile function may take several months to a year to improve.
