Scrotal Surgery (Hydrocele, Epididymal Cyst Excision, Orchidopexy)

What is Scrotal Surgery?

Scrotal surgery is performed to treat conditions such as:

  • Hydrocele (fluid-filled sac around the testicle)
  • Epididymal cyst (benign fluid-filled lump near the testicle)
  • Orchidopexy (correction of a testicle that has moved out of position)

These procedures are usually performed under general anesthesia and are often day surgeries, allowing for same-day discharge.

What to Expect After Scrotal Surgery

  • Mild to moderate swelling and bruising in the scrotum.
  • Pain and discomfort, which peaks within 48 hours and gradually subsides.
  • Mild blood-tinged fluid drainage from the incision site.
  • A temporary feeling of fullness in the scrotum.
  • Scrotal support (bandaging or jockstrap) may be applied.

Post-Procedure Recovery Tips

  • Wear supportive underwear for at least two weeks to minimize swelling.
  • Apply ice packs (wrapped in a cloth) to the scrotum for 20 minutes every hour for the first 48 hours.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, running, and strenuous activities for four to six weeks.
  • Keep the incision site clean and dry; showering is allowed after 48 hours, but avoid baths or swimming for two weeks.
  • Take pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage discomfort.

What to Avoid

  • Avoid sexual activity for at least four weeks to prevent complications.
  • Do not engage in activities that put pressure on the groin, such as cycling.
  • Avoid tight clothing that may cause irritation.

When to Contact the Doctor

  • Increasing pain, redness, or pus at the incision site.
  • High fever, chills, or worsening swelling.
  • Difficulty urinating or persistent nausea and vomiting.
  • Excessive bleeding or large hematoma formation.

Recovery Time

  • Most patients recover within two to four weeks, but full healing may take six weeks.
