Circumcision – Post-Procedure Care
What is Circumcision?
Circumcision is a surgical procedure that removes the foreskin covering the penis. It may be performed for medical, cultural, or religious reasons and is done under local or general anesthesia.
What to Expect After Circumcision
- Mild to moderate pain for the first few days.
- Swelling and bruising around the surgical site, which peaks around 48 hours and gradually subsides.
- Clear or yellowish discharge from the wound (part of normal healing).
- Increased sensitivity and discomfort with erections, which may last one to two weeks.
- Scabbing or crusting on the incision, which falls off naturally.
Post-Procedure Recovery Tips
- Keep the area clean and dry – Avoid submerging the penis in water for at least seven to ten days. Showering is allowed after 48 hours.
- Apply Petroleum Jelly – Apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around the glans to prevent the bandage from sticking to the skin.
- Wear Loose-Fitting Clothing – Soft, breathable underwear can reduce irritation.
- Manage Pain and Swelling – Use cold compresses and take paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed. Avoid aspirin.
- Abstain from Sexual Activity – Avoid masturbation and sexual intercourse for at least four to six weeks to allow proper healing.
What to Avoid
- Avoid tight clothing and rough fabrics that may irritate the healing area.
- Do not pull or pick at the scab – Let it fall off naturally.
- Avoid strenuous activities that may cause friction or pressure on the penis.
When to Contact the Doctor
- Excessive bleeding or blood-soaked bandages.
- Severe pain that does not improve with medication.
- Signs of infection – redness, pus, fever over 38°C, or foul-smelling discharge.
- Difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream.
Recovery Time
- Most patients recover in three to five days, but full healing takes four to six weeks.
