Radical or Partial Nephrectomy – Post-Procedure Care

What is a Radical or Partial Nephrectomy?

A nephrectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of a kidney. A partial nephrectomy removes only the diseased portion of the kidney, while a radical nephrectomy removes the entire kidney. The procedure is commonly performed for kidney cancer, severe kidney trauma, or non-functioning kidneys and may be done robotically, laparoscopically, or via open surgery.

What to Expect After a Nephrectomy

  • Mild to moderate pain at the incision site, which gradually improves.
  • Fatigue and reduced energy levels for a few weeks.
  • Temporary numbness or tingling around the incision.
  • Changes in urination, particularly if one kidney is removed.
  • Shoulder pain (if robotic or laparoscopic surgery was performed) due to trapped gas used during surgery.

Post-Procedure Recovery Tips

  • Drink plenty of fluids to support kidney function.
  • Eat a balanced, low-sodium diet to reduce strain on the remaining kidney.
  • Take short walks daily to prevent blood clots and improve circulation.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for six to eight weeks.
  • Follow wound care instructions to prevent infection.

What to Avoid

  • Avoid processed foods, excess protein, and high-salt diets, which can strain kidney function.
  • Do not strain during bowel movements; use stool softeners if needed.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, as they can slow healing and affect kidney health.

When to Contact the Doctor

  • Fever above 38°C, chills, or increasing pain.
  • Excessive swelling or pus at the incision site.
  • Severe nausea, vomiting, or difficulty urinating.
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain, which may indicate a blood clot.

Recovery Time

  • Most patients stay in the hospital for 2–5 days, depending on the surgical approach.
  • Light activities may be resumed in 2–3 weeks, with full recovery taking 6–8 weeks.
