Vasectomy – Post-Procedure Care
What is a Vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a permanent male contraception procedure that involves cutting or sealing the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm. The procedure is quick, safe, and effective, usually performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. It does not affect testosterone levels, ejaculation, or sexual function.
What to Expect After a Vasectomy
- Mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the scrotum for a few days.
- A small amount of blood or clear fluid may appear at the incision site.
- Temporary aching or mild pain in the testicles.
- A sensation of fullness or pressure in the scrotum, which gradually subsides.
- No immediate sterility – Sperm will still be present in the ejaculate for some time.
Post-Procedure Recovery Tips
- Rest and Ice Therapy – Lie down as much as possible for the first 24–48 hours and apply an ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) to the scrotum for 20 minutes every hour to reduce swelling.
- Wear Supportive Underwear – Wear snug briefs or a jockstrap for at least one week to support the testicles and minimize discomfort.
- Avoid Heavy Lifting & Strenuous Activities – Do not engage in running, cycling, weightlifting, or sexual activity for seven days to prevent complications.
- Pain Management – Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as needed. Avoid aspirin, as it may increase the risk of bleeding.
- Maintain Hygiene – Shower after 24 hours, but avoid baths, swimming, or hot tubs for at least one week to reduce the risk of infection.
- Continue Contraception – You are not immediately sterile after the procedure. It takes about 20–30 ejaculations or 8–12 weeks before sperm is fully cleared from the semen. A follow-up semen analysis is necessary to confirm sterility.
What to Avoid
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco for at least 48 hours, as these can increase swelling and prolong healing.
- Do not engage in sexual activity until cleared by your doctor. Ejaculation too soon may cause pain or discomfort.
When to Contact the Doctor
- Severe pain, worsening swelling, or excessive bruising.
- Signs of infection – fever, redness, pus, or an expanding lump at the incision site.
- Difficulty urinating or passing large blood clots in urine.
- Significant swelling of one or both testicles.
Recovery Time
- Most men return to non-strenuous work in two to three days but should avoid strenuous activities for at least one week.
- Continue using contraception until a follow-up semen analysis confirms zero sperm count.
