Urethral Reconstruction Surgery (Urethroplasty) – Post-Procedure Care

What is Urethroplasty?

Urethroplasty is a surgical reconstruction of the urethra to repair narrowing (strictures) or damage that blocks urine flow. This procedure restores normal urination and may require a catheter for a few weeks post-surgery to aid healing.

What to Expect After Urethroplasty

  • A catheter will remain in place for one to three weeks to allow the urethra to heal.
  • Swelling and bruising around the perineum or surgical site.
  • Mild pain or discomfort, especially while sitting.
  • Temporary changes in urination patterns after catheter removal.

Post-Procedure Recovery Tips

  • Follow catheter care instructions carefully to prevent infection or displacement.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep the bladder and urethra clear.
  • Avoid sitting for long periods and use a donut cushion to reduce pressure.
  • Do not strain during bowel movements; take stool softeners if needed.
  • Avoid sexual activity for at least six weeks to allow full healing.

What to Avoid

  • Avoid strenuous activities, running, and heavy lifting for six to eight weeks.
  • Do not remove or adjust the catheter without medical supervision.
  • Avoid caffeine and acidic foods that may irritate the urinary tract.

When to Contact the Doctor

  • Severe pain, fever, or chills.
  • Signs of infection – redness, pus, or foul-smelling urine.
  • Inability to urinate after catheter removal.
  • Excessive swelling or uncontrolled bleeding at the surgical site.

Recovery Time

  • Most patients recover in six to eight weeks, depending on the extent of the reconstruction.
  • Urinary function typically improves over several months.
