Surgery for Undescended Testis (Inguinal Orchidopexy) – Post-Procedure Care
What is Inguinal Orchidopexy?
Inguinal orchidopexy is a surgical procedure to move an undescended testicle into the scrotum and secure it in place. This is usually performed in childhood, but may also be necessary for adults with undescended or retractile testicles. The surgery is typically done under general anesthesia.
What to Expect After Surgery
- Swelling and bruising in the groin and scrotal area.
- Mild to moderate pain, which is manageable with pain relief.
- A small incision in the groin and possibly in the scrotum.
- A dissolvable suture or wound dressing over the incision.
- Mild difficulty walking or discomfort when sitting, which improves over a few days.
Post-Procedure Recovery Tips
- Rest and limit physical activity for the first week.
- Wear snug underwear for two weeks to provide support and reduce swelling.
- Apply ice packs to the groin area to help with swelling for the first 48 hours.
- Take prescribed pain relievers, as needed.
- Keep the surgical site clean and dry; avoid baths or swimming for two weeks.
What to Avoid
- Avoid strenuous activities and sports for four to six weeks.
- Do not allow direct pressure on the groin area, such as sitting cross-legged.
- Avoid sexual activity until cleared by Dr. Singh.
When to Contact the Doctor
- Fever above 38°C, redness, or pus from the incision.
- Increasing pain or swelling that worsens instead of improving.
- Difficulty urinating or persistent nausea and vomiting.
Recovery Time
- Most patients return to normal activities in two to three weeks, but full recovery takes six weeks.
