Ureteroscopy (With Stone Removal, Biopsy, Laser Lithotripsy, or Stent)
What is Ureteroscopy?
Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the ureters and kidneys with a thin, flexible scope. It may be performed to:
- Remove kidney or ureteral stones
- Break up stones with laser lithotripsy
- Take a biopsy of abnormal tissue
- Place a ureteral stent to allow urine to drain
This procedure is typically done under general anesthesia and does not require any incisions.
What to Expect After a Ureteroscopy
- Blood in the urine (hematuria) for up to a week, especially if a stone was removed or broken.
- Mild to moderate flank pain due to irritation of the ureter.
- Increased urinary frequency and urgency, particularly if a stent was placed.
- Burning sensation when urinating, which usually improves within 48 hours.
- Small stone fragments may pass in the urine over a few days.
Post-Procedure Recovery Tips
- Drink at least 2–3 litres of water per day to flush the urinary tract and help pass any remaining stone fragments.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks, as they may irritate the bladder.
- Take prescribed pain relievers and antispasmodics if needed for ureteral discomfort.
- Rest for 24–48 hours before resuming normal activities.
- If a stent was placed, follow up with Dr. Singh for removal as scheduled (typically in 1–2 weeks).
What to Avoid
- Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for one week.
- Do not delay urination; frequent emptying of the bladder helps healing.
- Avoid hot baths for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling and discomfort.
When to Contact the Doctor
- Severe, persistent flank or abdominal pain not relieved by medication.
- Fever, chills, or nausea, which may indicate infection.
- Difficulty urinating or complete urinary retention.
- Large blood clots or continuous heavy bleeding in urine.
Recovery Time
- Most patients recover in 3–5 days and resume normal activities within a week.
- Full recovery, particularly if a stent is involved, may take two weeks.
