Cystoscopy (With Possible Bladder Biopsy) – Post-Procedure Care
What is a Cystoscopy?
Cystoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the bladder and urethra using a thin, flexible tube with a camera. A bladder biopsy may be taken during the procedure if abnormalities such as tumors, chronic inflammation, or bladder stones are detected.
What to Expect After a Cystoscopy
- Mild burning sensation when urinating for 24–48 hours.
- Blood-tinged urine for one to two days, especially if a biopsy was performed.
- Increased urinary frequency and urgency for a short period.
- Mild discomfort or cramping in the lower abdomen or bladder area.
Post-Procedure Recovery Tips
- Drink at least 2–3 litres of water per day to flush out the bladder and reduce irritation.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, which can worsen bladder symptoms.
- Take mild pain relievers like paracetamol to ease discomfort.
- Rest and avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours.
- Urinate frequently to help clear out any remaining blood.
What to Avoid
- Avoid sexual activity for 48 hours if a biopsy was performed.
- Do not use harsh soaps or bubble baths that may irritate the urinary tract.
- Avoid high-impact activities for at least a day to prevent discomfort.
When to Contact the Doctor
- Persistent heavy bleeding or large blood clots in urine.
- Burning sensation that persists beyond 48 hours or fever over 38°C.
- Inability to urinate despite feeling the urge.
- Severe lower abdominal pain that does not improve.
Recovery Time
- Most patients recover within 24–48 hours and can return to normal activities.
- If a biopsy was taken, minor symptoms may last up to a week.
